Meets Neang Kavich, One of ABC "Exceptional" Individuals

As Season 2 “The Exceptional” presented by ABC approaches the finale this 16 December 2022, EAC News sits down to get to know the 10 exceptional individuals.

Neang Kavich, acclaimed film director, has made a name for himself after graduating from Cambodian Living Arts and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in 2013. After directing his debut short film 'A Scale Boy' in a workshop led by the award-wining director Rithy Panh, Kavich released his latest work, 'White Building,' to international critical acclaim.

Kavich told EAC News that he was surprised and excited to be recognized by such a big brand like ABC to promote his story because he didn’t think he has an interesting story to tell. Coming from a family who used to live in the White Building where people didn’t believe that he would make films when he grew up, he is humbled to have come this far. He hopes he could inspire others to find their dreams and fight for them.

He said, “[My story] shows that it’s important to know where you came from, but it’s more important to know where you want to go in life. With hard work, you can do anything you want.”

This campaign has been exciting and creative for him because of the other candidates' energy and all the different ideas people brought into the development. He loves sharing and learning from these candidates’ inspiring and success stories and hopes that there are many events and campaigns like these to bring more positivity, diversity, and creativity into society.

He added that everyone has a unique story to tell, and they can have impacts on others whether big or small. As long as they don’t give up on themselves, they, too, can be “exceptional.”

He said, “Finding your own voice from your experience or mistakes. Finding your dream is a must and keep chasing it, and no one is born with success. it’s really normal to fail and failure is part of the process to reach your goal. What you have to do is, just believe in yourself and work hard for it.”

If Kavich is selected to receive the $20,000, he would like to invest some of the money on his next feature film which he is currently working on. He would also like to produce short films or art projects from new emerging filmmakers and artists. He thinks it is important to continue to grow the human resource in this field to contribute to society.
